It cannot make use of the screen transfer intelligence built into ICA, RDP and VNC clients so it demands heaps of bandwidth and introduces far more latency. Digital KVM converts analogue video into digital, introduces errors/noise, jitter and so on. These software tools are now mature, offering high-quality low-bandwidth graphical transfer. KVM hardware was developed as a console switching technology way before smart thin client tools such as ICA, RDP and VNC were developed. The notion of "virtual KVM" involves using software to route the operator's Keyboard output, Video input, and Mouse output to/from the target computer - over the IP network. However they all involve some hardware switch device. I tried with all security features turned off (Java security level to the lowest, firewall off, running as administrator, added the DRAC IP and DNS name to the Java whitelist) on a clean test machine, and stil it would only work with an old Java version and a 32-bit Windows server.KVM switches allow a single operator to control multiple computers and they have evolved from patch panels and mechanical switches to digital KVM switches and KVM over IP devices. The host machine stil couldn't connect at all, so it seems to boil down to Java? Just to be sure, I tried with a really old Java 6 JRE on a 32-bit Windows 7 VM, and then it did connect, practically immediately, working fast as well. I tried different machines and different internet connections. I tried Oracle Java 6, 7 and 8 on Debian 8, Mac OS X 10.11 and Windows 10, and none of them will work with the iDRAC. I would like to use it either on Linux or Mac OS X, but it simply won't connect.
When starting the JNLP file, I always get an instant "connection failed" in almost all configurations, except for when using Windows 7 or older with Java 6 on 32-bit. I'm trying to solve some standing problems with this setup (as it's replicated on a number of other R710's), starting with the Java-based KVM Virtual Console. I have a R710 with an iDRAC6, all firmwares up to date.
